Negotiations between the National Labour Commission (NLC) and striking teachers have shown some progress, with three out of nine concerns addressed at a pivotal meeting in Accra on March 26. Among the resolved issues are the provision of laptops, the reinstatement of salaries blocked by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), and the establishment of terms of service for teachers. However, discussions are ongoing regarding the remaining six concerns. Despite these developments, the striking unions have not yet ended their strike.
Last week, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) declared a nationwide strike. In a recent interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on March 25, Ben Arthur, the Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, questioned the rationale behind the strike, emphasizing the importance of abiding by the country’s laws and following proper procedures.
